Second Grade Christmas Party--This Friday

We planned the party for 11:00, but since we  will release for the day at 11:45, we're going to start the party earlier.  

New time:  10:45-11:45

Here is what you are signed up to bring:

Also, don't forget to bring wrapped books for our book exchange.  We drew names on Friday, please let me know if the card your child drew did not make it home so I can send you an e-mail. The children did not manage to keep the names a secret - I think they spent the afternoon investigating!   :)

Friday - we will take spelling test in class

Thank you Drew for a wonderful presentation!  The Weapons of Ancient Egypt was a fascinating topic for the class to hear about.  You did an excellent job.

Advent:

Our second grade class is having a lovely time gathering around the CCS Advent Calendar each day.  It is exciting to talk about our great need for a Savior.  We can see how each story on the calendar points to a God that fulfills promises and provides for his children.  

We will begin Christmas activities and crafts this week!  

Spelling:

Spelling packets will go home tomorrow and we will have tests on Friday morning.

Vocabulary:

Keep up the good work on the vocabulary words!  The children love to memorize and recite the definitions and are quizzing each other during free time in class.  I love it!

Grammar:

We are discussing contractions this week.  It will reinforce your child's learning to look for contractions in everyday surroundings.  

Mr. Popper's Penguins:

We love this book!  Right now we are sequencing events from the first half of the book and next week we will begin discussing characterization.  We will have a final project over the book after Christmas.  

 

 

Anthony did a wonderful job teaching the class about The River Nile before our break.  Good job!   Each project has been unique and full of interesting facts.  The children are presenting with poise and confidence.

It will be Drew's turn to present on "Ancient Egyptian Hunting and Fishing" this Friday!  We are all excited to learn more about that.

I hope everyone had a restful break!  I am thankful for our wonderful school full of remarkable students and families. 

October and November have been busy and gone by in a flash!  This week I am hoping to have a slower week at school.  We will be working hard of course, but will not have extra events to prepare for.

Hagar and Ishmael is our Bible/History focus for the week.  We will continue in our grammar study of verbs and enjoy Mr. Popper's Penguins.

 This week:

Monday: We will be talking about Thanksgiving along with most of our usual subjects and we will begin our Sharing Feast preparations.  You have children with thankful hearts.  They have been making a "thankful chain" that is full of love for family, friends and life in general.  Look for spelling words/homework in your child's take-home folder!

Wednesday: We will be baking pumpkin bread for The Sharing Feast.  All baking supplies and ingredients will need to be at school! 

 

Friday:  1. Anthony will present about The River Nile.  2. Spelling Test  3. Sharing Feast  4. Early Release @ 11:45

3. Good Choices Party

Second Grade has filled the marble jar!  I am so proud of our class.  They have had excellent behavior this year and now we get to celebrate!  Our party will be this Friday from 10:30-12:15.  Parents are welcome to join us!

The children took care of the sign-up sheet for the party and food has already been assigned.  Each student chose what he/she wanted to bring.  Here it is!

Latin in song!

The second graders continue to surprise me with how well they're doing in Latin!  We have learned vocabulary for lessons 1-15 in our text Prima Latina.  We've also been working on the Pater Noster (the Lord's Prayer in Latin) -- they have the first half down pretty well. 

Here's a sense of the structure of our week:
On Tuesdays, we review and add more vocabulary words, most recently taking them from the Latin hymns we're memorizing.  So far, they know "Veni, Veni, Immanuel" (O Come Immanuel) and "Adeste Fidelis" (O Come All Ye Joyful).  We're currently working on the second verse for each of those songs.  Songs are a wonderful and enjoyable way to pick up common vocabulary words and grammar in context.  On Thursdays, we review using games and read a Roman myth.

We hope to show off our Latin at the Christmas program.  If you want to quiz your children on their Latin, here are a few words from our list:

Mrs. Piggle Wiggle Cure

On Friday, your child will complete a project in connection with Hello, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.  They have already come up with an imaginary (or real) behavior problem and thought of a magic cure for the problem. 
They will create a poster to show these ideas in class tomorrow.  The only work they will need to do at home, is to create a sample of the cure.  They should be able to use ordinary household items for this.  

For example: to make "magic dust" your child could mix flour and glitter, put it in a container, and create a label for the container.  It should be simple!

The children will have the opportunity to show their creations in class on Friday morning.

Next Week's Assignment

On Monday, we will make portrait mummy masks in class.  Please send (not wear) a knit long sleeve shirt to school on Monday.  Arms with stripes would be ideal!

Also, in order to be in full costume, each child will need two rolls of toilet paper.

Spelling Homework

On Monday, a spelling packet went home in your child's folder.  This is due on Friday.  There will also be a spelling test on Friday over the words in the packet.  *Bonus words (see last page in the packet) are included on Friday's test.*  This homework should not be overwhelming if it is divided up during the week.  Spelling words will not be posted on the blog, because we are working from two separate lists each week.

Our "Personal Pyramid" project begins Tuesday!

Don't forget to bring your supplies.  

As a reminder, here is a section of the homework assignment that was sent home in your blue folder:

As a Homework Assignment, bring a Ziploc bag (labeled with your name) filled with a number of small items which can be added to the walls and floor of your pyramid.

 

For example, you might want to include:

• a photograph of yourself and/or your family
• magazine pictures or stickers of favorite foods, games, pets, and pastimes

  Friday is Canterbury Faire.  Students may wear non-scary costumes (no weapons) to school that day.  It is also a half day for the elementary students.  Pick up is at 11:45.

2nd Grade Math News - Oct 12

In Math the students have reviewed Addition Math Facts: 0, 1, doubles, 10, 2 and 9.  The students have also worked on Telling Time to the Half Hour, Estimating and Meaureing Line segments in inches, Ordering two digits,  Fractions, Rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 2, Counting pennies, nickels and dimes, and writing money amounts using Dollar signs and Cent Symbols

Next week they will be reviewing Addition Math Facts: 3 and 4, Collecting Data using Tally Marks, Estimating the sum of two two-digit numbers, Estimating and Measuring Line segments using centimeters, and ordering three-digit numbers.
