Next week we will start our study of the presidents in honor or Presidents Day coming up. The children will each be given a president and they will do research on that president and they will make a report to share with the class. This will all be done in class. This should be a really fun way to help the children learn a little about some of Americas Presidents!

Wednesday we are headed to the Rodeo! This should be a veryfun field trip. Thank you to Cindy Scott and Meg Wagner who will be our diversand chaperones. We will leave the school at 8:30. The children can wear jeansand boots but must have their ChristChurch Schoolt-shirt on. Also please make sure you send a sack lunch with your child. Wewill be having lunch at the rodeo. DON’T FORGET we must have yourchild’s booster seat! They also need to bring a pair of tennis shoes tochange into after the rodeo for P.E. If you have any questions or concernsabout the filed trip please don’t hesitate to call or email me.

I am sure your children told you but Lava our beloved class fish passed away yesterday. It was very sad. But this morning Ms. De La Paz surprised the class with a new class pet. Donuts for Dads!

Here are a few reminders!

-The school Christmas program is at 6:30pm TONIGHT.The children need to be here at 6:00pm. They need to wear a white shirt and khaki pants or skirt. The program should not last more than 30 mins. It will be very cute!

- We will have show-and-tell on Thursday

- Spelling Test will be Friday. If your child will not be here Friday then he/she will have to take the pre-test as their spelling test.

- Our class Christmas Party is on Friday at 11:00am. We will be doing our party combined with first grade due to half of our class not being here on Friday. HOWEVER we will do our book exchange on Thursday. So PLEASE MAKE SURE you have sent your child’s wrapped book with him/her by Thursday. You can send the book early and I will keep it safe until Thursday.

Churches Touching Lives for Christ

The Second and Third Graders bring canned fruit. This will be our PURPLE/PINK group;Each group will have a color-coded box that matches the group’s color, so that when
your child brings his or her donation, it will be easy to put it in the correct box. All food items should be brought to school by Thursday, November 17. On Friday, November 18, each child may wear the color of his or her group to school instead of uniforms. At the Sharing Feast, each group’s food will be brought to the altar in the Parish Hall and blessed by Father David before it is delivered to CTLC later that afternoon.

This is my favorite book we read all year. It is a classic! I think the children will really enjoy this book. The children will have vocabulary to learn, comprehension quizzes/test, writing and so much more to do with this unit.

Tuesday: You'll get your chapter 2 packets today. Make sure you use them to study the vocabulary words and chant on the first page (our next quiz will be next Tuesday). We'll continue learning about the person, number, and tense of verbs, as well as discuss English derivatives of some of chapter 2's vocabulary.

Thursday: Today we will practice translating verbs in a variety of persons and numbers. We will also drill chapter 2 vocabulary together. You will begin working on your chapter 2 worksheet, which is due next Tuesday.

We are off to a great start in Latin! So far we have learned about present tense verbs and the three questions that can be asked of any verb: What person is it? What number is it? What tense is it?

On Thursday we will take our first quiz over the chant and vocabulary words on pg. 1 of your packet. Don't forget to study!

Writing and Mom

The second grader's have been finding ways to branch out with their writing. Their Mother's Day writing produced a variety of ways to express their feelings about their moms. Diamonte poems described their mothers using nouns, verbs, and adjectives. An acrostic poem extended to a paragraph describing three favorite characteristics of their moms. The students were proud of their gifts to their moms, not only because of the smiles and hugs it produced from their mothers, but also that they could see improvements with correct use of grammar, an expanding vocabulary, and an increase in imagination.

Letter Writing

Second grade continues to practice their letter writing skills. This week, they wrote a letter to a favorite character in Little House in the Big Woods. Each student told their character what they enjoyed about them, as well as ask questions and give advice - such as telling Charley that he hopes he doesn't "cry wolf" anymore! On Fridays, the students write a letter to their families giving them a brief synopsis of their week at school. The second graders amaze themselves at how much their writing has progressed. They are writing more paragraphs, including more details, and adding touches of their own personality.

Holy Week

Second grade followed the events of Holy Week as told by the gospel of Mark during morning devotional time this week. The students tested their recall of the sequence of thirteen events that week in their "Road to Easter" project.

Inventions in Our Lifetime

Second grade wrote a paper describing an invention that came about during their lifetime. This was prompted by the chapter "Wonderful Machine" in Little House in the Big Woods. In the story, Laura described the threshing machine and its effect on the family's harvesting wheat - that not only was it easier and produced more in a shorter amount of time, but it yielded a more quality grain. Making a connection to Laura's life, the teacher recounted the ways and excitement that the addition of the microwave oven had in her childhood home. To say the least, the children were amazed that there was a time that the microwave did not exist! The children then took inventory of their lives to see what inventions have made their life easier/better. With much enthusiasm, the inventions of cell phones, computer games, game boxes, and i-phones came pouring out. This proved to be a good lesson to show how important progress is in a person's life, as well as being grateful for the things that we use in our everyday lives.

Salute to Texas/Cowboys

Second graders spent some time this week to concentrate on the greatness of their Lone Star State. They learned about the hardships of being a cowboy and the struggle of the early Texans as they fought for their independence. A geography lesson showed them how varied the landscape of Texas is and the products that come from each region. With poetry, they practiced their grammar through the writing of a diamante poem about Texas. A diamante is a special poem that uses a simple structure of placing nouns, adjectives and verbs that result in a diamond shape. On Friday, Cowboy Day, the students dressed up in cowboy attire (after learning the significance of each article of clothing. A family member of the school brought two heifers for the children to brush and feed as well as demonstrate lassoing. The children's journals produced their longest entry yet at the end of a very eventful day.

Annual Fund Participation Drive

Achieving excellence requires commitment from everyone. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating our students and maintaining our first-rate faculty. Donations provide the essential funds needed for curriculum development, faculty, scholarships and operating costs.

Starting Wednesday, April 6, we will launch our Annual Fund Participation Drive at the classroom level. Our goal is 100%!! The classroom with the highest percentage of Annual Fund contributors will win a great afternoon out: a special lunch out followed by fun afternoon activities. The lunch has been generously donated by this year’s Annual Fund Chairs Lori and David Butler. The contest is only for the number of contributors, not the amount contributed. Previous contributions to this year's Annual Fund will count towards your class; however, only donations specified for the Annual Fund will count. The contest will conclude Friday, April 29.

Every gift no matter the size helps. Your tax-deductible contribution will make a significant difference to CCS students immediately and in years to come.

Latin Bee!

The date has been set for the Second Annual CCS Latin Bee!

Since there are now two sections of Latin we will host two separate events on the same day. The Latin Bee is scheduled for Thursday, May 19.

Latin I will begin at 9 a.m. in the Parish Hall. Latin I students all have a list of words to begin studying.

Latin II students will be begin at 10 a.m. also in the Parish Hall. Vocabulary words for these students have been handed out as well. This will be a very challenging competition because of the more advanced words we have studied this year in Latin II.

This was such a fun competition last year, going several rounds into the tie-breaker phase. I really look forward to the Latin Bee this year! I'm so proud of all my students.
